Main causes of back pain

Unfortunately, there are several possible causes that trigger back pain. Bad posture is one of them. This is because, with inadequate posture, there is an incorrect distribution of body weight, overloading muscles and bones, which can lead to injuries over time.

According to Dr. Edilson Machado, an orthopedist who works at the Blanc Center for Pain and Spine Surgery, degenerative spine disease is the main cause of chronic low back pain. “Unfortunately, in humans, the components of our spine undergo a ‘wear and tear’ over the years and painful symptoms can appear in the third or fourth decade of life. The intervertebral disc (shock absorber between the vertebrae) and the joint facets (inserts in the posterior portion of the vertebrae) are the structures most affected. Therefore, they are the main cause of back pain”, explains the doctor.

Sedentary lifestyle and overweight also negatively affect the health of the locomotor system, disrupting muscle and bone structure. In addition, several spinal diseases can cause chronic and acute pain, impairing patients’ quality of life.

This is the case, for example, with herniated lumbar and cervical discs, canal stenosis, painful degenerative discopathy, facet arthrosis, scoliosis, kyphosis, osteoporosis, among others. Traumas and infections can also occur, causing constant pain, in addition to pain caused by tumors in the spine region.
